Adaptation Fund

Great brands aren't created once. They're protected, refined, and elevated over time. Since the Adaptation Fund became operational in 2007, Melissa Miller, Therium’s Creative Director, has helped shape one of the world’s most recognized brands in international climate finance—guiding its visual evolution while preserving the consistency that builds lasting trust.
Created under the Kyoto Protocol and serving the Paris Agreement, the Adaptation Fund invests in projects that help vulnerable countries adapt to climate change and build long-term resilience. Today, its work spans more than 100 countries, supporting initiatives that protect communities, strengthen ecosystems, improve food security, and prepare for an increasingly unpredictable future. As the Fund’s global influence has grown, so has the importance of a brand that communicates optimism, credibility, and measurable impact.

The Challenge
The Adaptation Fund was not simply introducing a new organizational; it was defining a new model for international climate finance. Its brand needed to earn the confidence of governments, multilateral institutions, implementing partners, donors, and local communities around the world. Every report, presentation, campaign, and conference presence had to communicate the same message: this is an institution that delivers real results for people living on the front lines of climate change.
Building trust at a global scale demands more than beautiful design. It requires a brand that remains unmistakably consistent while evolving alongside an organization’s mission and growing international influence.

The Opportunity
Joining as the organization became operational in 2007, Melissa was given the rare opportunity to help shape a global brand from its earliest days. Through nearly two decades of trusted partnership, she has guided its visual evolution while ensuring every new expression strengthens the identity audiences have come to recognize and trust.
Rather than approaching branding as a one-time engagement, Melissa embraced a more enduring role: Build. Steward. Elevate.
First, she helped build the visual foundation of a young institution establishing its place on the world stage. The identity centered on a mark inspired by unfolding fronds—an elegant symbol of growth, resilience, and adaptation. Paired with the clean humanist typography of Myriad Pro, the system struck a careful balance between institutional credibility and accessibility, avoiding the rigidity often associated with multilateral organizations. A natural color palette—deep greens, ocean blues, and earth tones—rooted the identity in the landscapes and ecosystems the Fund exists to protect.
As the organization expanded its reach, Melissa became the long-term steward of its identity. For nearly twenty years, every major communication the Adaptation Fund has shared with the world has passed through the same creative leadership—ensuring extraordinary consistency across annual reports, Adaptation Stories, COP conference materials, campaign systems, publications, and digital platforms.
At the same time, the work continued to elevate how the Fund communicates impact—transforming technical climate finance into clear, human-centered storytelling that builds confidence and drives global engagement.

The Strategy
Strong brands evolve with purpose.
Melissa developed and continuously refined a visual language that balances institutional authority with human optimism. Editorial design became the foundation of the system—combining immersive environmental photography with humans in every image, disciplined grid structures, and generous whitespace to create clarity within complexity. Information design and data visualization were treated as storytelling tools, translating climate finance metrics into intuitive, emotionally resonant narratives.
This system extended across every touchpoint: annual reports, flagship publications, strategic plans, impact reports, COP environmental graphics, presentations, event branding, infographics, digital communications, and executive briefing materials. Each application reinforced a cohesive, recognizable brand designed for both global visibility and long-term endurance.
More recently, this evolution led to the development of a modular “Impact Snapshot” system—an adaptable design framework that allows the Adaptation Fund to communicate results quickly and consistently across reports, presentations, and digital channels. The system extends the core identity while enabling faster, more agile storytelling of project-level and regional impact.
The goal was never simply to create communications that looked refined. It was to ensure every output strengthened the brand itself.

The Results
Nearly twenty years later, the Adaptation Fund stands among the most respected institutions in international climate finance, supporting hundreds of adaptation projects that improve the lives of millions of people across the globe. Melissa has been there every step of the way.
What began as a branding engagement became a rare long-term creative partnership defined by trust, continuity, and strategic evolution. By continually building, stewarding, and elevating the Adaptation Fund’s brand, the communications ecosystem is instantly recognizable, globally respected, and resilient enough to grow alongside one of the world’s most important climate institutions.
As the Adaptation Fund approaches its 20-year milestone, Therium is continuing this partnership—developing anniversary communications that reflect two decades of global impact and evolution, while reinforcing the brand’s enduring relevance for the future.
Because the most powerful brands aren’t defined by a launch. They’re defined by the trust they build over time.
